This is the work of Amber Albrecht, a Canadian artist and illustrator whose work I first saw on the cover of a literary magazine, Sycamore Review. I cultivate a distinct love-loathe relationship with visual art; I love to look at it, but loathe talking about it. It always leads to just another absinthe-fueled argument about theory and academic distinctions. As I’ve gotten older, my tastes are more visceral. I’d rather sense something intensely than discuss the conceptual particulars.

When Only One
That’s possibly why I enjoy Amber’s work so much and why I am sharing it here, with you. There is nothing heavy handed here. This is top-notch illustration, contrasted and quite immediate with vivid, yet subtle values–
